Extra Information
Madeira lies 600 miles south west of Portugal off the African coast, about 100 miles north of the Canary Isles. Madeira and its neighbour Porto Santo were discovered by Portugese sailors in the 15th century and have been associated with Portugal ever since. There are no beaches on Madeira, the cliffs rise hundreds of feet straight out of the Atlantic. The mild climate and rainfall mean the island is lush and green and home to a great variety of exotic flora. Funchal itself is a spectacular sight, its houses extending far up the hills on all sides of the bay. There is a cable car from the old town to the village of Monte that provides great views. The most popular attractions on the island are the Cathedral in Funchal, the Whaling Museum, the Sao Vicente caves and the Frederico de Freitas museum of Madeiran, African and Moorish artefacts.
